S H E R - OUR LOCAL RESPONSIBILITY
For us it is important to contribute to the both the society and wildlife areas that we operate in. We want to play an active part in both protecting the environment and wildlife and at the same time improve living condition to people in our neighborhood. From small actions like switching from single use plastic bottles in our safari vehicles to reusable drinking bottles to larger innovation projects to target plastic waste at our local beach, Mbongoland Beach.
We have defined 4 key areas that we want to focus on:
Sports Health Education Recycling. Hence the acronym SHER.
In 2015 we started fundraisers to gather all sorts of football equipment for the local team on Zanzibar called Makunduchi Center Boys. After this project we have provided jerseys to many sports teams in Tanzania, and we have brought teams from Europe to play against the Makunduchi Center Boys, as well as arranging football-matches in remote villages in Southern Tanzania to play against our visiting European teams. We have also had multiple fundraisers for the local school in Makunduchi, providing school material. We encourage our visitors to Zanzibar to engage in local community activities in Makundunchi as well as visiting the school.
In 2016 we started our well-project in the village of Makunduchi with great support from our travelers and supporters. This well secures water to several hundred households as well as tomato farms today. We have also done (and continue to do) multiple fundraiser to provide school material to primary and secondary schools on both Zanzibar as well as local villages close to the wildlife areas that we operate in.
In 2020, we entered a partnership with NITO and IUG/EWB (Engineers Without Borders), to set up a recycling container at our very own Mbongoland Beach in D ar es Salaam. This is an ongoing project that we are currently scaling up. The purpose is to convert “trash into cash”, cleaning up our local beach and at the same time c ontribute with employment to those less fortunate in our local neighborhood. The past two years we have run an innovation contest for engineer and technology students in partnership with NITO (The Norwegian Society of Engineers and Technologists). The mission has been to create innovations on products that can be produced in the recycling container to better the livelihood of people in our neighbourhood.
Our devotion to conservation and the preservation of wildlife and their protected areas has always stood as a core goal in our company. As times have moved and grown, we as a company have grown too. Offering our clients the opportunity to get closer. Participate and do more. By giving our clients the chance to be on the front lines of conservation, with the best in their fields. To give back in any way they can.
We build and promote these conservation holidays, with the main goal focused on the project itself and build the trip around the event.
Different countries across Africa offer a wide variety of organisations and projects the support different regions and wildlife. As a company we have carefully selected organisations and projects to get involved with. We support these projects as they have the most impact in their fields. With men and women who strive for the best to save these animals and their environments.
This project is led by our Head of Sustainability and Wildlife Conservation, Veronica Donald. Her responsibility is also to coordinate and follow up wildlife conservation projects all over Tanzania, to ensure we play our part in both collecting vital data that we share with them, as well as introducing wildlife conservations as part of our safari trips. Wherever possible, we try to use “local options” to support the local communities in the trips & pack ages we create, without effecting the quality of the trip. If you want to get involved or are curious about our projects, get in touch with Veronica!
PS! If you want to financially support our projects, you can by animal prints from our safaris that goes unabridged to our local projects. Have a look:
