Southern Tanzania road-trip adventure
A diverse roadtrip through multiple national parks in Southern Tanzania
This journey will take you on a road trip through some of the less touristy and rural parts of Tanzania, with incredible diversity, both when it comes to landscape and topography as well as activities.
You will start your adventure in the outskirts of the largest city in Tanzania, Dar es Salaam. In most cases flying in and out of Dar es Salaam for you international flights will be the best and cheapest option. Here you will spend 2 nights at the Explorer Villa, located in a peaceful area with just a hundred meters to the beach. You will meet the Tanzania Explorer team who have been invloved every part of your journey, and they will prepare you for what’s to come. During your stay here, you will have the opportunity to have a full beach day (or two) before your safari starts. A short boat ride away from the villa, you will find the amazing islands of Bongoyo and Mbudya that will satisfy even the most picky beach travelers.
Your roadtrip starts from Dar es Salaam going straight west and the first stop is Mikumi National Park. A perfect warm-up safari destination to enjoy the latter part of the day in the Mkata Plains. aka miniature-Serengeti. After a nice morning safari, you continue to the lush and green Udzungwa Mountains where you will spend 2 nights. Hiking the tropical forest trail of Sanje Fall, the high¬est waterfall within Tanzania´s National Parks is a nice break from the game drive.
We then drive through an amazing escarpment and very varied landscape to one of the best preserved safari secrets –Ruaha National Park. Here you will spend 4 amazing days in the wild, with plenty of game-drive, walking safari, and enjoy a magical view of the Ruaha River. We rank Ruaha as the best park in Tanzania, due to the high density of predators as well as varied topography, few visitors and the baobab-landscape.
Less know than the sister island Zanzibar, Mafia Island probably has the best snorkeling and diving of all the islands. Being a marine reserve, there are far fewer lodges on the island and less people. This is an ideal destination for those who are looking to enjoy the white sands in peace, while heading out for long lazy walk or exploring the coral reefs around the island. Mafia Island is known to be a heaven for whale sharks during certain time of year. This is a very unique opportunity to view these beautiful creatures close up, in their natural environment. And yes, you are able to dive/snorkel with them. There are also so many wonderful atolls surrounding the island, which makes for a stunning private experience on a sandy beach “in the middle of nowhere”.
After your stay in Mafia Island, we will fly you back to Dar es Salaam for your international flight, unless you want a couple of relaxing days at the end in the Explorer Villa.
